Introduction: Aleksandar Erdeljanovic, Head of Archives, Yugoslav Cinematheque, Director of Jugoslav Pantelic, Yugoslav Cinematheque
For a century, the long-lived members of the Topalović family have run a respectable funeral enterprise and they are investing in a crematorium because “that’s the future”. When great-grandpa dies in 1935, the will is immediately disputed, especially since everyone considers the youngest member of the family to be a worthless layabout. The truth is, Mirko has no interest whatsoever in the undertaking business, having eyes only for movies and Kristina, daughter of local gangster Bili Piton. It’s not long before fury and outcries burst to the surface. Immediately after the premiere of the film by Slobodan Šijan it was awarded cult status in Serbia, with turns of phrase from the script still commonly employed to this day. Essential viewing for anyone into black humour!
