In the 2021/22 season of MET LIVE IN HD, in addition to three contemporary operas, we can see Italian, French, Russian and Austrian classics. Among the contemporaries, the Metropolitan Opera's first opera by an Afro-American author, the well-known jazz musician Terence Blanchard's Fire Shut Up in My Bones, will be featured. In New York, this will be the opening performance of the season, but we will see it second in the series of broadcasts. The other two contemporary pieces are Brett Dean’s great Hamlet adaptation with Allan Clayton in the title role, and the 21st century Eurydice adaptation by American Matthew Aucoin starring Erin Morley.
Among the Italian masters Verdi’s Rigoletto comes to life in the art deco world of the 1920s in Bartlett Sher’s new direction, and Don Carlos with Matthew Polenzani can be seen in an original five-act version never played before in the Met. Also a new direction is Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor in the staging of young Australian actor-director Simon Stone. The title role of Ljudmila Monastyrska in Puccini’s Turandot is a particular attraction. Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov and René Pape will amuse us in the original, two and a quarter hour uninterrupted version. Richard Strauss’s viennese opera Ariadne in Naxos will be sing by one of the best Ariadnees in the world, Norwegian Lise Davidson, accompanied by stars such as Brenda Rae and Isabel Leonard. True to the traditions of the Met, there will be family opera performances during the Christmas and New Year festivities in an abbreviated version: at 19 December we will perform the Magic Flute with Erika Miklósa as Queen of the Night (2006), and on the New Year's day we will screeningMassenet’s Cinderella with Isabel Leonard.
