Generations - German Films 70

German cinema at its best - 8 movies between December and March

18 december 2024 - 31 march 2025

Location: Uránia Nemzeti Filmszínhéz - Díszterem

Uránia's new screening series presents a historical selection of German cinema. It brings back to the screen films that have long since established German cinema's international reputation with festival prizes. The title refers not only to the successive generations of filmmakers - from Alexander Kluge and Rainer Werner Fassbinder to Tom Tykwer - but also to the generations whose stories, embedded in history, are reflected in these films, holding up a mirror to today. The series marks the 70th anniversary of German Films, the organisation that promotes German films, but it also rhymes with another momentous occasion. December is the customary feast for European films, when the European Film Awards are presented. This year's Lifetime Achievement Award goes to one of the greatest living masters of modern European cinema, Wim Wenders, who was President of the Academy for 24 years and whom Uránia audiences were able to meet in person at the Budapest Classics Film Marathon in September. Now we celebrate with one of his most beautiful films, Wings of Desire. From January onwards, seven more films will be screened in the order of their creation - all in their original languages (mostly German), with Hungarian subtitles.

The series is produced in cooperation with German Films and Goethe-Institut, with the support of the National Cultural Fund.
