1917. Cheery Jack and the more reserved David vie for the attentions of Sylvia in smalltown America. However, before the situation is resolved, the gale of the First World War hits the town and both lads enlist. Mary, who is hopelessly in love with Jack, also joins up as a driver. The two young men enthusiastically sign up as airmen but they have no idea what awaits them. This work directed by William A. Wellman was one of the biggest hits for Paramount. It won best film and best visual effects awards for its brilliant aerial combat scenes – that define the style of modern-day action movies – at the first ever Oscar ceremony in 1929. Wings is also special for being one of the earliest (partial) sound films: it includes specially prepared noises and audio effects.
