Director: Joshua Oppenheimer
Sequel to the acclaimed The Act of Killing, the extraordinary 2012 documentary in which director Joshua Oppenheimer made perpetrators of the 1965–66 Indonesian genocide re-enact their crimes in style of genre films, The Look of Silence now turns its attention to the victims. Through Oppenheimer’s work filming perpetrators, a family of survivors discovers the identity of their son's murderers. The youngest brother is determined to break the spell of silence and fear under which the survivors live, and so confronts the men responsible for his brother's murder – something unimaginable in a country where killers remain in power. The director: “A film cannot change a country’s political landscape. Like the child in the Emperor’s New Clothes, it can only create a space for the people who see it to discuss the nation’s most painful and important problems without fear, and for the first time. Into this space comes The Look of Silence.”
